Abstract: High school guidance counselors influence students’ decisions concerning which area to major in upon entering college. Even though guidance counselors can influence students’ decisions about choosing a major, many guidance counselors lack knowledge about the opportunities available in information systems (IS). This study captures quantitative and qualitative data from interviews to gain a better understanding of why guidance counselors may or may not encourage students to major in computer-related areas. It also provides suggestions for future research.
