Abstract: This activity explores a case study of a (fictional) software product company to learn about ways to make money from software, including Free & Open Source Software (FOSS). The case study shows how a company might evolve through different models, it does not try to imply that some models are always better than others. This activity is designed for Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL). POGIL is an evidence-based approach to teaching and learning in which collaborative student teams work in the classroom on activities that are specifically designed to help them develop their own understanding of key concepts and to develop skills such as teamwork, communication, information process, critical thinking, and problem solving. Each POGIL activity contains a series of models (e.g., graphs, diagrams, pictures) with critical thinking questions that guide teams through learning cycles to explore the model, invent their own understanding of key concepts, and then apply that understanding.
